Ecommerce Growth Goes Far Beyond the Ad Account
I recently joined Vinny O’Brien on The Struggle Bus for a wide-ranging conversation about ecommerce, Google Ads, agency life and the factors that genuinely influence retail growth.
You can watch or listen to the full episode via Vinny’s episode page.
The conversation was intentionally off-the-cuff. There were no rehearsed questions or polished talking points—just an honest discussion about what it takes to help ecommerce businesses grow in a competitive market.
Marketing Starts Beyond Google Ads
A core theme of the episode was simple: good marketing does not begin and end in an ad account.
Google Ads, Shopping campaigns, Performance Max and AI can all be powerful growth tools. But they cannot compensate for weak ecommerce fundamentals. Product range, pricing, margin, stock availability, delivery, offers, website experience and seasonal relevance all shape whether paid traffic can convert profitably.
For retailers, the best results usually come when the advertising strategy is aligned with the wider business plan—not treated as a separate activity.
Seasonality, Planning and Customer Behaviour
We also discussed the importance of planning for seasonal demand rather than waiting for it to arrive.
Retail performance is shaped by more than search volume and campaign settings. School bills, strikes, weather, holidays, paydays and family routines all affect how and when customers spend. Understanding those real-world signals helps retailers plan promotions, budgets, stock and messaging more effectively.
The strongest ecommerce strategies are proactive. They identify the products, categories and offers that should lead each season, then give campaigns enough time and budget to learn and scale.
Google Ads, ChatGPT Ads and Attribution
The conversation explored where advertising may be heading, including AI, ChatGPT ads and the ongoing challenge of attribution.
Attribution matters, but it should not become a distraction from the bigger commercial picture. A customer may see an ad, return through organic search, read reviews, receive an email and buy several days later. No single platform captures the full journey perfectly.
The goal is to use data intelligently, while also applying commercial judgement. Revenue, profitability, customer acquisition, repeat purchase behaviour and overall business growth matter more than chasing a perfect attribution model.
Honest Agency Communication
We also spoke about the importance of honest conversations between agencies and clients.
A good agency should be able to explain what is working, what is not, what is realistically achievable and what needs to change outside the advertising account. That can sometimes mean discussing product range, promotions, website conversion rate or fulfilment—not simply recommending more spend.
Clear communication, realistic expectations and a shared plan are what create long-term partnerships.
The Future of Ecommerce
From AI-supported agency work to drone delivery and changing consumer habits, ecommerce is moving quickly. What remains consistent is the need to understand customers, offer them something worthwhile and make it easy for them to buy.
Thanks again to Vinny for having me on The Struggle Bus. It was a brilliant conversation—and the Green Day ending was particularly fitting.
